A Grand Rapids staple, River City Improv has been performing since 1993. We do improv, which is like an unscripted movie, plus the addition of lots of variety... and a bathroom break! Our team members are all local members of the West Michigan Community. We love Grand Rapids, and we love comedy. We are as passionate and varied as the scenes we portray onstage. We base our performances on live audience suggestions, from the mundane to the endearingly wacky. If you're always making other people say "Dad, you're so weird," you were BORN to be a member of our audience. This is your moment in the sun. At River City, we believe that laughter can bring us plenty of those sunny moments. Humor doesn't need to be scummy or taboo to be funny. In fact, we believe laughter is best when it can be shared. At an RCI show, co-workers can laugh alongside grumpy supervisors. Looking-for-Loves can laugh alongside their newly-met Tinder dates. And because it's "everyone-friendly," you're free to share with everyone from your nephew, to your yoga instructor, to your great-great Aunt Myrtle!
Pete Vandersluis is one of those guys that you would think is very simple, and yet he is. Pete hopes that he will soon be able to get a pet flying monkey. He plans to name him or her 'Gary'. After the difficult housebreaking process is over, Pete plans on training Gary to run errands and things like that. Gary could go to Meijer (you probably call it Meijers) and pick up different things. It's gonna be great.
Jeff is passionate about fun, people and fun people. He aims to be all three, claims to be 2 and hopes he's at least one.
Tracey's days of work at Harvard's Graduate School of Education are now over, much to the relief of her pocketbook. Presently, Tracey teaches the Falcons AP Literature and Composition, and British Literature. Here's a challenge: do your best to find any grammatical errors as she speaks.
Mel has been on this team awhile. At least a year, if not more. She literally makes a couple people laugh on average every so often. Many people think she is varying degrees of a great fit for this type of gig.
Wendy has never been a fan of math, she stinks at it. She also failed the Iowa Basic Skills Test for map reading every single year. She tried to cross country ski in Bessemer last winter and accidentally went on the pro course instead of the course meant for beginners. There was quite a bit of screaming involved. Wendy does not like to eat meat. And while we are on the subject of her weaknesses and flaws: she has always preferred puppies to babies and she looks horrible in yellow.
Welcome to Mike's bio. Please remember to remove your shoes, or use the shoe covers provided at the entrance. Mike recently came into possession of a "crock-pot," and enjoys "fire and forget" meals - a phrase he all too often uses in conversations. Mike is also a new Uncle, and looks forward to accidentally teaching his nephew new words and mannerisms.
Michele is 5 ft. 11 (and a half). She likes half and half in her coffee. She is pretty sure she has half of her children's full attention when talking to them. She is known as the "better half" in her marital relationship to Brent (half the time), is half nuts, and loves Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (b/c they're half chocolate and half peanut butter). She wants everyone to half a good time tonight.
Todd Herring is still growing. Soon he will join the NBA, the NFL, NBC, NASDAQ, PBA and any other group looking to add height to their roster. Todd has worked with River City Improv for a certain number of years that is greater than that of Mike and Mel, less than Rick, Marty, Wendy, Michele, Jeff* and Tracey. *Jeff's tenure is classified, statement is based on arbitrary estimates and Jeff is older.
Ben likes to drink classic Coca-Cola. Ben loves to read Hemingway. Ben likes to play video games, and read/write lots of critical analysis about video games. Ben sometimes needs a lot of coffee to get going in the morning, and then makes the mistake of drinking it at night and starting the cycle of addiction all over again. Ben also loves improv!
Inspired by real life events on a whirly bird ride at the Wisconsin state fair, Marty is best known for composing the hit song "We are the Whirled" which was recently taken off of YouTube because of ridiculous claims of "copyright infringement" by unknown copyright trolls Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones.
Isaac has a lot of great qualities. One of his big flaws though is he loves the TV show "The Big Bang Theory." Isaac also loves beards. Isaac once had a much longer beard but he shaved it after he found a baby bird living there and decided to adopt it as his own. Isaac's bird son does not like Isaac. Isaac is sensitive to this and would prefer you not to ask him about it. Thank you.
